SailingClubs.com.au is an independent directory and educational guide to sailing clubs in Australia.

It exists because choosing a sailing club is harder than it should be. Clubs describe themselves in language that assumes you already sail, the name of a club tells you almost nothing about what it does, and the information that actually decides whether a club suits you — active fleets, current programs, storage availability, what a season costs — is scattered, inconsistent and frequently out of date.

Who it is for#

Anyone trying to work out where and how to sail in Australia.

That includes people who have never been on a boat, parents looking at a junior program, adults who want to crew without owning anything, sailors moving interstate, boat owners looking for somewhere practical to keep and launch, and club committees trying to understand how other clubs handle the same problems.

It is deliberately written for people without a sailing background. Where a term is unavoidable, it is explained or linked.

How the site is structured#

Two layers, kept technically separate.

Club records are facts about specific organisations — location, contacts, sailing waters, boat classes, racing status, training, facilities, affiliation. These come from the YouSail database and each carries a verification date.

Editorial content is everything else: the guides, the category pages, the explanations of programs and handicap systems, the advice on comparing clubs. This layer explains categories and never asserts a fact about a named club.

That separation is the core design decision of the site. It means a guide stays accurate even when a particular club record is waiting on re-verification, and it means no piece of general advice can quietly become an unchecked claim about a real organisation.

What this site does not do#

• Rank clubs, or publish "best of" lists without a stated methodology and comparable verified data
• Publish ratings or reviews it did not genuinely collect
• Accept payment for inclusion, listing position or verification status
• Infer facts — a club named "Yacht Club" is not evidence of a marina, a bar or keelboat racing
• Hard-code fees, schedules or contact details into editorial pages, where they would go stale invisibly
• Publish club logos, photographs or other material without the rights to use them

Editorial independence#

Listing position, inclusion and verification status are not for sale. A club that corrects or completes its own record produces a more accurate page, not a more prominent one.

If commercial arrangements ever exist on this site, they will be disclosed on the page where they apply and will not affect how clubs are ordered or described.

Accuracy and limitations#

Some things on this site will be wrong or out of date. Club programs start and stop, committees change, storage fills, and a website that was current last season may not be now.

The honest response to that is not to claim otherwise. It is to date everything, to distinguish clearly between verified, absent and unchecked, and to fix errors quickly when they are reported.

Anything that changes seasonally — programs, fees, availability, calendars — should be confirmed with the club itself before you act on it.

Corrections#

If something here is wrong, it should be fixed. Editorial errors are corrections to this site; club record errors are best fixed at the source so that every place the record appears is corrected at once.

The images on this site#

All illustrations, diagrams and maps are original work created for this site. The map of Australia is a simplified navigational device rather than a cartographic reference: the coastline is smoothed and state borders are drawn as the straight lines they mostly are.
